Resident Testimonial

"I was reluctant at first to come and live here but I realised I needed help. It was not easy at first, but with the help of the staff they encouraged me to obtain my independence. Life ... is very easy going, to the point where I have become totally independent with my daily living. I do have regular jobs that I enjoy doing, like feeding the budgies and collecting the mail each day for the office. I am free to come and go as I please, going out with relatives. I also go for walks and draw house plans. I have made many friends ... and feel that I now have a whole new life."

What to look for in a Home?

It can be difficult to know what to look for when choosing a Rest Home or Hospital. What standard of care should be offered? What recreational activites and lifestyle programme should be provided? What in particular should you be looking out for?

We understand that people have different needs and we appreciate that our Home may not meet those needs. We have provided a checklist to help guide you through the process of what to look for when selecting a care facility, and have also outlined some questions that we are often asked when people enquire about one of our Homes:

What emergency and secruity systems are available if I need help?

All our homes are warm, clean, well-maintained and safe. This includes:

  • Full sprinkler and smoke detection systems

  • Call buttons in each room, bathroom and common use area

  • Hand and grab rails in bathrooms and hallways

  • All staff are regularly trained in emergency and evacuation procedures

  • Quality and control systems that are regularly reviewed by our management and the Ministry of Health

Do you celebrate special occasions?

We understand that family are not always able to be present for special occasions, and TerraNova Homes make an extra special effort to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, and any other special days and events. Any excuse for a knees-up!

We will provide you with 24-hour care services, including hotel services and personal care. You will be responsible for all personal expenditure incurred by you. A full list is outlined in our service contracts and admission agreement, but a brief list is outlined below. Please note that residents will always be advised of any costs and we would never impose additional expenses without their prior knowledge.

  • Hairdressing

  • Personal effects and insurance

  • Personal toiletries and clothing

  • Personal toll calls and postage

  • Social outings and some entertainment

  • Some non-prescribed and non-subsidised medication

  • Dental, optician and audiologist fees

What is the Assessment Process?

All residents are medically assessed before admission to establish that the level of care required will be provided, and to determine if this qualifies for government funding. Private paying residents are also assessed to guarantee government funding assistance if it is needed later on. The Ministry of Health has issued an easy-to-understand booklet called "Looking at Long-term Residential Care in a Rest Home or Continuing Care Hospital - What you need to know". This can be viewed on their website at www.moh.govt.nz.

So what do I do now?

We recommend you call and make an appointment to view one of TerraNova's facilities so you can see for yourself what makes our Homes so welcoming. This is also a good opportunity to have an informal chat with the Manager, who can answer any other queries you may have and explain the assessment and application process in more detail.
