What is residential care?

Meeting your clinical needs in a residential setting

Residential care is a type of care when someone lives in a facility where they receive care as if it is their own home. During their stay all household tasks are performed for the residents, including cleaning, laundry, meals, and snacks.

Great residential care is provided in two parts. Firstly, clinical care must be provided with confidence and competence by a skilled team of clinicians. Second, the residents must be empowered to live their life in a way of their choosing, with flexible living areas and activities available in the home.

Who is eligible for residential care?

Our services are typically provided to older persons, however, we have successful history of providing services to adults of all ages.

To find out if you require residential care, you can undergo a needs assessment with your local district health board (DHB). In the first instance you should discuss your health with your GP who may refer you for assessment. If you have questions about how to get an assessment, contact us on 0800 00 55 11 and we may be able to assist.

Once you are assessed you will be able to contact Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ) to find out if you are eligible for financial assistance from the government. We will be able to assist you with the necessary paperwork. You are able to fund your care with your personal wealth if for whatever reason you can not secure a subsidy from WINZ.

TerraNova provides the following types of services:

Hospital-level Care

This type of care is for people who are medically frail and requires daily input from a registered nurse. This person will typically have limited mobility, and require two people to tend to the majority of their daily care needs.

TerraNova specialises in providing this type of care, with the majority of our current residents receiving hospital-level services.

This type of care is for people who are no longer able live in their own home, but who are still moderately independent. This person may not have any complex medical conditions, but still require some regular medical assistance.

While this person may not require daily input from registered nurses, TerraNova promises to provide a registered nurse 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, regardless, for no additional cost.

This type of care is typically suited for anyone who has been recently discharged from hospital, but feel that they require more time in a medical facility before they can return to their own home.
